Justin lightly tugged the reins, and Jasper immediately came to a stop. Aiden looked like he was on the verge of pouting, and a smile tugged at his mouth. He couldnât help it.
He loved that Aiden enjoyed riding so much. He hadnât known him for long, but he sensed that he wasnât normally this animated. Hell, this was the happiest heâd seen him, and the sight warmed his heart like nothing had before.
And heâd had a hand in bringing it out of him. It made him feel like he was on top of the world.
You feel it now too, donât you? his owl asked. You feel like heâs ours.
I do. I still donât understand it, but I do.
âDo we have to stop now?â
âYeah, weâve done enough for the day. If you stay in the saddle too long, youâll get sore, especially since you havenât ridden a horse before. But we can do this again next week.â
âYou promise?â
The doubt in Aidenâs blue eyes broke his heartâand told him so much about his past, all at the same time. Making sure not to break eye contact, he answered with as much reassurance and confidence as he could, hoping heâd hear it in his voice.
âOf course. I will never say anything I donât mean, Aiden. Iâll never lie to you.â
He was quiet for a long moment as he chewed that over, and it was all Justin could do to not pull him off Jasper and hug him as tightly as he could. This little boyâs heart had been broken, and he wanted more than anything to fix it.
He didnât have that power, though, and he hated it. All he could do was help him overcome what heâd been taught in the past.
And he knew what Aiden was feeling hadnât come from Cambry. Heâd bet his half of the ranch on it. Heâd already thought that her ex had done a lot of damage, and every moment he spent with them confirmed it.
After he helped Aiden down, he showed him how to take care of Jasper after a rideâeven if it had only been a slow walk around the pasture. Caring for the horses was just as important as riding them.
The whole time, he snuck glances at the porch, barely able to take his eyes off Cambry. When sheâd stepped out of her car, her curly, strawberry blonde hair up in a ponytail, wearing a t-shirt, worn jeans, and sneakers, he swore his heart stopped.
Heâd never seen her in anything other than work clothes. And today⦠well, today she looked like she belonged on the ranch, like this was her home, tooâand it was a damned good look on her.
He shouldnât be thinking like this. The last thing he needed was to fall for her when she wasnât his mateâbut there was a little voice inside him, telling him it was too late.
He was already falling for her.
Forcing himself to look away, he concentrated on showing Aiden how to brush Jasper. But then the
